My little hen (Megan, now that we know she's not a Josh) with the pecked behind is doing fine! On day two I continued to mist her with hydrogen peroxide but then switched to spraying on an enzyme cleaner (good ole' Terra Cleanse) that I use to keep the chicken coops and rabbit condo clean. That same day another hen (beautiful Crystal) was attacked. I put the two together and focused on what I determined to be the culprit - our "sweet" little Flower, my daughter's favorite! I put everyone back together again except for Flower, who I put in a cage by herself. She was none too pleased but I think I heard the other hens clapping (or was that flapping?)!

By day three I had another bloody event to take care of. Our one rooster (aptly named Rocky Rocko) went after my husband. While trying to protect himself my hubby knocked off one of Rocko's spurs. Yep, blood all over the yard, thankfully Rocko's, not my husband's. ;-P

Hubby yelled for me to grab a towel from the house. I did so along with the items mentioned on the Backyard Chickens' forum - hydrogen peroxide, gloves, gauze & tape, and SUGAR. I laid Rocko down on a table outside and my hubby kept his towel-covered head down for me. The spur was still dangling by a thread so I twisted it off. I put the peroxide on and the blood poured out. Misted on some Terra Cleanse and this slowed the blood down a bit. I packed the hole with sugar, lots of it, and continued packing until the blood stopped seeping through. Lastly, I rolled the gauze on and taped it down.

I cut Rocko's "cast" off after a day and cleaned it again with peroxide and Terra Cleanse. He's doing just fine though I think I noticed "Wanted" posters of my husband hanging in his coop. :-)

You know, I've gathered up feathers that raccoons have left as "gifts," chased off foxes, buried rabbits and hamsters and other family pets, but nothing had prepared me for this past week.

Things have worked out, by the grace of God. He sure has a sense of humor too for the hen that pecked my daughter's eye was the one to get her entire behind pecked. What goes around...
